Window Display

Like there are universal laws of attraction regarding money, there are universal laws for creating dynamic retail store windows that attract customers to look at your windows and come inside.

Every time someone passes by your store, you want to leave them with a memorable impression about your brand and your products. Store windows are like mannequins, they are silent salespeople. Even when your store in closed, your window displays are selling for you as people walk or drive by your store.

In yesterday’s post we explained the five “laws of attraction” which was about the basic concepts of good visual design. Today we have the five ” laws of execution” to give you specific tips for creating sensational window displays. We highly recommend that retailers use a trained visual merchandiser – many are are available on a freelance basis – to implement these ideas.

Once again we thank the The Visual Merchandising Blog (written by a blogger based in the Philippines) for the information below. The photos are from the Louis Vuitton store in Paris courtesy of Facebook page of Chameleon Visual, a creative consultancy based in South West London.

To Revitalize Communities In Special Way For Pop Up Shops

It is called Popuphood and involves giving six new retail shops in five previously vacant storefronts six months of free rent. The goal: to revitalize the neighborhood while giving retailers a chance to get on their feet. Popuphood, has enabled an entire vacant block in Oakland to be filled with businesses. As a result much needed foot traffic is coming into the area, sales revenue is being generated for local businesses (which the city will gladly tax) and this neighborhood looks appealing instead of blighted.

Pop up shops were initially started by large retail chains launching new products or promotional events. Although these pop up shops may have been in a vacant retail space, it was vacant space in a busy and vibrant shopping area with lots of existing foot traffic. There always have many different mannequins in different features.

But the PopupHood concept is for small business owners, many of whom do not have brick and mortar stores. And they are located in areas that typically had no foot traffic, perhaps even a blighted area.

We LOVE this concept. We love it so much that we offer deeply discounted rental rates for retailers participating in PopupHood. We know that having retail displays that are visually appealing generates more sales for retailers. (Pass by a Ralph Lauren or Anthropologie store to see stellar examples of visual appealing displays)

These are our mannequins in the window that Oakland Grown, a non-profit organization supporting independent local businesses, had during the Xmas holidays. The display was in an empty storefront provided by PopupHood. Don’t you think the mannequins make the window display more appealing? They sold a lot more t-shirts as a result of having them displayed on mannequins than they would have otherwise.

Window Mannequins Brands

I remember Karl Lagerfeld said that the concept of beauty changes with the times, What is beautiful today, might not be considered beautiful tomorrow. On the other hand, what was beautiful 20 years ago, is not the ideal beauty today.

Mannequins has always been considered as the reflection of the "ideal beauty" during the time that it was manufactured. And if there ever was a mannequin company who understood it best, it is Adel Rootstein.

Adel Rootstein & Co. started during the early 1960s, when Britain was beginning to influence the world of fashion. Mary Quant and Jean Muir were the symbols of the new movement. The personality cult was in full swing.

But there was a major drawback in the London fashion scene - mannequins. The ones displayed in store windows were stilted, stylized, rigid and lifeless. In short, they look like "dummies," and very far from the glamour and beauty of the fashion runways.

Extensive experience in window design had given Adel Rootstein an awareness of the void that existed between the catwalk and the store windows.

Adel wanted to fill that gap. With the Adel Rootstein Company, she was able to create a whole new generation of window mannequins, and finally bring the fashion catwalk to store windows.

From the 1960s through the 1990s, Twiggy, Sandie Shaw, Joanna Lumley, Janet Suzman, Joan Collins, Lord Patrick Lichfield, Marie Helvin, Dianne Brill, Yasmin Le Bon, Susanne Barscht, Ute Lemper, Karen Mulder and Jodie Kidd were as much as part as the international fashion scene and the store of display mannequins, thanks to Adel Rootstein.

In short, Adel turned fantasy into a living legend.

A Rootstein display mannequin starts life as a sculpture based on the chose model, a process taking several weeks to complete. The result is a figure which expresses the mood of fashion embodied in the qualities for which the model has been selected.

From this form, a plaster cast is made which is then used to produce the final mould. 80% of the perfect fiberglass display mannequins to emerge from this mould are exported all over the world.
Fashion which was once dictated by individuals, whether personalities or designers is now equally determined by economic and social climate, either as a statement of it or a fantasy flight from it.

Adel Rootstein mannequins continue to capture, reflect and transmit the evolving fashion shapes by epitomizing "the moment" as each mannequin is created.

About Fashion

Fashion, how do you know about it?Clothing?shoes?wigs?Cosmetic?and other what?
Fashion, a general term for a currently popular style or practice, especially in clothing, foot wear or accessories. Fashion refer to anything that is the current trend in look and dress up of one person. The more technical term, costume, has become so linked in the public eye with the term "fashion" that the more general term "costume" has in popular use mostly been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while the term "fashion" means clothing generally, and the study of it.

For a broad cross-cultural look at clothing and its place in society, refer to the entries for clothing, costume and fabrics. The remainder of this article deals with clothing fashions in the Western world. Early Western travelers, whether to Persia, Turkey or China frequently remark on the absence of changes in fashion there, and observers from these other cultures comment on the unseemly pace of Western fashion, which many felt suggested an instability and lack of order in Western culture. The Japanese Shogun's secretary boasted (not completely accurately) to a Spanish visitor in 1609 that Japanese clothing had not changed in over a thousand years. However in Ming China, for example, there is considerable evidence for rapidly changing fashions in Chinese clothing.

Changes in costume often took place at times of economic or social change (such as in ancient Rome and the medieval Caliphate), but then a long period without major changes followed. This occurred in Moorish Spain from the 8th century, when the famous musician Ziryab introduced sophisticated clothing styles based on seasonal and daily timings from his native Baghdad and his own inspiration to Córdoba, Spain.Similar changes in fashion occurred in the Middle East from the 11th century, following the arrival of the Turks who introduced clothing styles from Central Asia and the Far East.

The beginnings of the habit in Europe of continual and increasingly rapid change in clothing styles can be fairly reliably dated to the middle of the 14th century, to which historians including James Laver and Fernand Braudel date the start of Western fashion in clothing. The most dramatic manifestation was a sudden drastic shortening and tightening of the male over-garment, from calf-length to barely covering the buttocks, sometimes accompanied with stuffing on the chest to look bigger. This created the distinctive Western male outline of a tailored top worn over leggings or trousers.

Creative Window Displays Makes Shopping Exciting From Around The World

Window shopping is a good way to promotion.Whether actually looking to buy or just browsing, the perfect window display could grant a business new customers and keep the already established ones. Although there are a variety of businesses that utilize window displays to promote what they have to offer inside, the fashion business is prolific in conjuring up monumental creations that are inspiring as well as perplexing. For example, not too long ago the very well-known fashion house Lanvin wowed the public with stunning dresses that ballooned as if a gust of wind had taken them by surprise. Also they well placed some mannequins in the window. It's a possibility that if these dresses were actually out in the open, they would have easily floated away giving the sky a taste of fashion with wings.

A stores front window is their calling card.Especially the mannequins, they dress different fashion clothes in window, let people see it in the first time. Essentially, its not always up to the price, quality or name of the store. Better stores will more than likely have better displays. However, less expensive shops like H&M have more than adequate window displays that drives consumers into their stores. Presenting the latest fashions is just part of the equation. Quality mannequins are almost certainly one of the biggest factors in a fashion window displays overall appeal. Chipped body parts, unless intentionally created that way; lopsided wigs, and uncoordinated attachments will automatically loose appeal and wont motivate consumers to come inside the store, even if the clothing is amazing. Some stores have used live mannequins in window displays to great effect as well.

Fashion window displays can be kooky, conservative, out of this world, scary or just plain ordinary. Nonetheless, there are certain aspects that cannot be left out if a store wants to draw in the crowds and show what they have to offer to best effect. Cleanliness, creativity and a good story line all contribute to a visually intriguing window display. Some window display designers have used television, music, strobe lights, animals and many other kinds of props to win the hearts of consumers passing by. Then again, is a window is dusty, messy and outright disorganized the countenance of the public may project disapproval which isnt beneficial to the store at all.

Most visual merchandise designers work full-time with the bigger retail stores, and with smaller shops under contract. This visual merchandisers have to be a talented bunch. Retail stores are looking for fashion window displays that show-off and promote their merchandise to the max. A good window designer has a lot on their hands. They must structure out interesting concepts to get people inside the store, and just being creative isnt enough. This job requires patience, a knowledge of various display materials, good contacts, and hard work. Some fashion window display designers have won numerous awards, respect, and bigger contracts from satisfied employers. Here are some skills that a visual merchandiser should have:

DesigningL:This is the primary skill any window display designer will need. This means designing within a broad-spectrum. The idea is not to know just the doctrine and rudiments of design, but also how to design effectively.

Decorating:The right decorations adds a look to places where consumers may ordinarily not go to. A good decorator will trigger the emotions and the curiosity of the consumer.

Painting:A keen sense of colour harmonization is key. This doesnt mean just painting the walls either. Visual merchandisers should have a good hand with painting various shapes as well.

Moulding Props:A creative hand is useful in cutting interesting props. Styrofoam and paper mache are two good materials that are easy to paint with great creative properties.
